Here is Ari Ne’eman’s full testimony that was presented at the House Committee hearing today, November 29, 2012, where witnesses testified on the federal government response to rising rates of autism cases. Among the topics they were expected to address were research into the causes, and treatment. Only two autistics were allowed to testify. Ari Ne’eman, President of Autistic Self Advocacy Network and Michael John Carley, Executive Director, Global & Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership.
I am a mom of two, a science teacher, and a crazy cat lady. As a nerdfighter, I strive to increase the awesome in the world. I also have Aspergers. I was diagnosed in my mid-30s a year after my son was diagnosed. My daughter also has Autism (Level 2) and Bipolar II. I have learned how to be an advocate for my children and also an advocate for myself. Autism is not a disease and it can not be cured. Those of us who are on the spectrum only wish to be accepted for who we are and ask to have help when we need it. The world can be a very alien place for us.
